Acai: The Top Superfood
Fri, 2016-07-22

The Acai berry is a dark purple color fruit which is similar in shape to a grape.

These berries grow in huge clusters near the tops of palm trees, which grow in the Amazon rain forests.

Acai berries are considered one of the top superfoods, generally due to their incredible antioxidant properties as well as their many other health benefits.

Within the nutritional pulp and skin, Acai berries are very rich in antioxidants, amino acids, fibre, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals making it a near perfect energizing fruit.

The antioxidant effect of the Acai berries is mainly due to the fruit’s content of anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant (containing 10 to 30 times more anthocyanin than red wine). According to some research, acai has more antioxidant content than cranberry, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, or blueberry.

Other health benefits include osteoarthritis, high cholesterol, weight loss, obesity, detoxification and for improving general health.

As a food, the acai berry is eaten raw and as a juice. But since it is a perishable fruit, you can find it in the form of juice or powdered supplement in regions outside South America. The juice is also used commercially as a beverage and in ice cream, jelly, and liqueurs. A cup of juice contains 110 kcal.

As a supplement, you can find it in the form of capsule. The dosage guidelines are typically 1,000 mg once or twice daily with food.
